Options for Outdoor Enthusiasts at Lake LBJ

Lake LBJ has a lot of appeal year round. As a constant level lake, it is one of only a few Central Texas lakes that still have water levels high enough for small water craft during the current drought impacting the region. Additionally, it is also well stocked with Bass, Catfish and Crappie, making it a popular destination with fishermen too. However, while the lake itself is most definitely a big draw for visitors lured in by the cooling water and water activities, visitors should know that there are some pretty entertaining outdoor attractions near the lake. Why not make Lake LBJ your home base for a summer getaway and enjoy some of these natural outdoor wonders on your next trip? Spectacular Views From Enchanted Rock For out of area visitors that want to get a nearly birds-eye view of the Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a fabulous place to get the lay of the land. Enchanted Rock is an absolutely enormous pink granite rock formation that sores almost 425 feet above the ground. There are several scenic trail located at the park for hiking, but the highlight is most definitely the climb to the top of Enchanted Rock, where successful hikers will be rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Make sure to get there early, as it is a popular destination and admission to the park is closed when visitor capacity is reached. It is also a good idea to go early to avoid the blistering summer heat. Nature enthusiasts can also enjoy other activities like camping, technical rock climbing, bird watching and star gazing. Options for Animal Lovers Animal lovers will certainly enjoy being able to enjoy wildlife up close and personal. The Exotic Resort Zoo in nearby Johnson City is home to over 80 species of exotic species of animals. Part of the mission of the zoo is to help prevent the extinction of endangered species, and over half of the animals at the park are or have been on endangered species lists. This special animal park provides 137 acres of natural habitat for these endangered species to breed and raise their young in a natural environment and gives these species a chance at survival, while simultaneously educating people about the animals and the challenges they face. There is even a petting zoo for visitors to get to interact with animals that are not commonly interactive with humans. Bird watchers won't want to miss Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. This rugged, pristine preserve is home to 245 bird species, and as a result has been designated as a Globally Important Bird area, critical to the conservation of numerous bird species, including the endangered Golden-Cheeked Warbler and Black-Capped Vireo. In addition to being a protected area for birds, the refuge is home to wildflowers, butterflies and many plant species that will delight visitors to this special park. Cool Off Underground A short drive from Lake LBJ is Longhorn Cavern State Park, a welcome 68 degree respite from the sweltering summer temperatures above ground. These caverns were formed over thousands of years as river water cut into the limestone bedrock, creating spectacular chambers underground. The striking caverns meander and curve, a unique appearance from other caverns credited to the unusual formation by running water. In addition to its haunting beauty, the caverns have an interesting history, including a gunpowder manufacturing location during the Civil War, a speakeasy during Prohibition and a unique concert venue in present day. Self-guided and specialty tours are available, and special events are frequently featured, so make sure to check out the special events calendar. A visit to Lake LBJ presents wonderful opportunities to enjoy nature and the gorgeous outdoor surroundings of the Highland Lakes region of the Texas Hill Country. Visitors will not run out of options to enjoy the outdoors!
